In the beginning...
Living in Houston most of my life, I began teaching yoga in 2002 after practicing since 1994. After a three year sabbatical on a farm in Rosehill, Texas that I bought to get away from the city and grieve, I quickly gained students and interest at the Tomball College, Southeast Tae Kwon Do Center, and the Tomball Fitness Center. I continued to learn and gather information to answer a few very deep questions about the meaning of life while living on my lovely little farm. Those were very transformative years.
In 2004, I began teaching more in Houston at the JCC, The Houstonian, The Good Space, and other places. Driving back and forth to the country became more of a chore than a pleasure. It is very difficult to be in two places at the same time. I hesitated to sell the farm but I felt that I had no choice. I moved back to Houston to the City of Bellaire, and it was during these next years that I developed a following in Houston and was convinced by my lovely friend and student Brittany Smith to teach five of my most dedicated students about the art of yoga. They became the first teacher training group and in many ways Jennyoga's fantastic five in 2007!
We met at my house every week and spent a significant amount of time together exploring yoga, its teachings and Vinyasa Flow. Brit's love and enthusiasm encouraged me to move forward with a formal teacher training, becoming Yoga Alliance certified at the end of 2007 when we opened our doors at Jennyoga on Westheimer. Since then I have personally trained many people in the art of Vinyasa Flow and opened a second location that is donation only powered by generosity in Spring Street Studios. The majority of my teachers have gone through the training. We believe in the heart and soul of yoga and the goodness that it brings.
